The Insiders

Description

The BA(Hons) Acting programme is excited to present the graduating students in a newly commissioned work written by playwright Alfian Sa’at. Known for his provocative and thoughtful works, Alfian Sa’at is a National Arts Council Young Artist Award winner and his poetry and plays have won awards both nationally and internationally. Directed by the actress and director Jo Kukathas, whose collaborations with Sa’at include Nadirah,

Parah, Cooling Off Day and Hotel.

In the year 1972 a newspaper called New Nation published what was the first piece of investigative journalism into the queer community in Singapore, by Betty L. Khoo. The feature was called: ‘The Outsiders: New Nation looks at lesbianism in Singapore’. Those who contacted New Nation gave the impression of an almost desperate need to talk about their lives, most proved exceptionally frank and often expressed themselves with much feeling. It’s been 46 years since that article first came out. We wonder what happened to all those women who were interviewed and what that community is like today.
